Do Just One Thing

Danny Seo on

Backyard bird and nectar feeders need to be properly maintained to keep birds safe and healthy. Store birdseed in a cool, dry place in a sealed, airtight container -- ideally metal or thick plastic -- to keep out moisture, pests and rodents, and avoid leaving bags open or in humid garages. If seed gets damp, mold and bacteria can quickly develop, so give it a sniff before using; if it smells off, skip feeding it and bury it deep in your compost pile. For hummingbird feeders, check the nectar regularly -- if it looks cloudy or discolored or has floating particles, it's time to empty, scrub thoroughly and refill. Old or contaminated nectar can be harmful, or even fatal, to birds.
